Habitat & Hotworks
Hot Work Defined:
Hot work is any work process in which a flame is used or sparks or other sources of ignition may be produced, including:
• Open flames e.g. cutting, welding, burning
• Electrical, friction or impact sparks e.g. air gouging, riveting, drilling, grinding, chipping
• Sparks resulting from the discharge of static electricity
• Hot surfaces such as engine manifolds and exhaust systems, brakes, hot bearings, coils, welding or cutting torches, etc.
• Heated gasses
• Internal combustion engine
In the early days, a facility such as petroleum production platform would have to be shutdown, pipeline to be purged and cleaned of flammable material before any hot work operation. With oil and gas prices at record heights, energy companies are reluctant to shut in much needed production that could create a substantial financial burden for the operator of the platform. Because of this, special hot work procedures and equipment have been developed. These procedures are designed to ensure the safety of operation personnel, equipments and Company properties.
Habitats are useful in conditions where it is forbidden to use open fire. A habitat is a tent with positive air pressure designed to be enclosed over the area where hot work is performed. It is portable and inflatable structure, technologically designed to facilitate hot work in Zone1 area. Air-driven blowers, placed in a safe zone, provide positive pressure in the habitat and make it impossible for potentially explosive gases to seep in. A sensor is attached at the intake/sensor module for detecting the presence of undesirable conditions of incoming air is responsive to signals from the sensor in the intake/sensor module to deactivate the blower thereby triggering the audible and visual alarm system as well. It is designed to be utilized on offshore platforms and eliminates the need for costly, time consuming shutdowns.
